Is Dubai Tax-Free in 2026? The Honest 0% vs 9% Breakdown

Short answer: No — Dubai is not 100% tax-free in 2026, but it is still one of the most tax-friendly places on earth. There is 0% personal income tax, and company profits are taxed at 0% up to AED 375,000 and 9% above that. Qualifying free-zone income can stay at 0%. Here is exactly how it works.

Is Dubai really tax-free in 2026?

Personal income in the UAE is genuinely taxed at 0% — salaries, dividends and most personal capital gains are not taxed. What changed is corporate tax: since June 2023 the UAE applies a federal Corporate Tax on business profits. So "Dubai is tax-free" is now a myth for companies, but still true for individuals.

Who pays the 9% corporate tax?

Corporate Tax is 0% on the first AED 375,000 of taxable profit and 9% on profit above that. A small business earning under AED 375,000 effectively pays nothing. There is also Small Business Relief (0% if revenue is AED 3,000,000 or less) for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026.

Do free-zone companies really pay 0%?

They can — but it is conditional. A Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP) pays 0% only on qualifying income. Income that does not qualify is taxed at 9% from the first dirham, and if non-qualifying revenue breaches the de-minimis limit (the lower of 5% of revenue or AED 5 million) the 0% rate can be lost for several years. Every company must still register for Corporate Tax, even when the rate is 0%.

Is there personal income tax or VAT?

There is no personal income tax in the UAE. There is 5% VAT, with registration required once taxable turnover reaches AED 375,000. To be treated as a UAE tax resident you generally need 183+ days in the country (or 90 days plus a home or business tie) and can request a Tax Residency Certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dubai 100% tax-free? No — personal income is 0%, but company profit over AED 375,000 is taxed at 9%, and there is 5% VAT.

How do I keep the 0% free-zone rate? Set up as a Qualifying Free Zone Person, keep income qualifying, stay inside the de-minimis limit, maintain real substance, and file on time.

Do I still register for Corporate Tax at 0%? Yes — registration is mandatory even when you owe nothing.

Will I owe tax back home? That depends on your home country's residency rules, not just a UAE visa. Breaking home-country residency (plus a UAE Tax Residency Certificate) is what matters.
